EU Machinery Regulation

The new EU Machinery Regulation – what changes from 2027.

The EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 replaces the previous Machinery Directive. For manufacturers, this means new requirements for documentation, safety and digital processes.

What is the EU Machinery Regulation?

The EU Machinery Regulation (Regulation 2023/1230) was adopted in July 2023 and replaces the previous Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Unlike a directive, a regulation applies directly in all EU member states – without national transposition. The transition period runs until 2027.

What specifically changes?

The key changes affect three areas: first, digital operating instructions are now permitted – manufacturers can provide instructions purely digitally instead of including them in paper form. Second, new cybersecurity requirements apply to connected machinery. Third, risk assessment for AI-powered machine systems is newly regulated.

What does this mean for manufacturers?

Manufacturers must adapt their conformity assessment and documentation to the new requirements. The option of digital operating instructions is a real opportunity here: instead of thick paper binders, a QR code on the machine can provide access to all relevant documents – exactly what QIKY already offers today.
